| Zoë O’Brien arrives in Hartwell fresh from
the trauma of a failed affair with a married man, and a lingering
memory of her parents’ death in an accident the previous year.
A new teacher at the local primary school
in North East England, she is looking for improvement in her social
life, and it is not long before she learns that the Hartwell
Players, an amateur musical group, are about to begin their new
season. With an early background in stage and drama, she finds the
prospect of a musical production enticing.
Into her life arrives an eclectic mix of people, and Zoë is unaware
of the significant influence they will have on both her present and
her future.
Written with considerable
skill and an obvious understanding of the craft of writing, this
comic-tragic tale reminded us of a "Bridget Jones' Diary", or an
"Under The Greenwood Tree" by Thomas Hardy.
David George has a special gift for describing
characters, and captures women's feelings particularly well.
If you are looking for an enjoyable and
stimulating read, we thoroughly recommend this book.
